Mental Illness is nonpartisan. It doesn’t matter how much money you make or your age or where you live or work. It doesn’t matter whether you have health insurance or mental health coverage.
But it matters to all of us that one in four American adults - over 55 million people - live with a diagnosable mental health or substance abuse condition; that 30,000 lives are lost to suicide every year; and that the cost to our economy of these and related problems is more than $100 billion annually and rising.
Government can play a critical role in improving and protecting America’s mental health. But right now our elected officials aren’t doing all they can. We can change that. To make mental health a national priority, we need you to:
-
Raise the profile of mental health in the 2008 presidential, gubernatorial and congressional elections; -
Help educate the candidates about the importance of mental health and the treatment that works; and -
Above all else, vote for the candidates who will deliver mental health reforms.
